Working out, training secrets & the 'Ghajini' look

I am an outdoor sports person. I was never interested in weight training. Before Ghajini, physical fitness to me meant stamina and a flexible, athletic body. But the director of Ghajini had a vision that his character of Sanjay Singhania should look in a particular way.

When we started the journey, I was not sure we would be able to achieve what we had set out to do. It was not easy at all in the beginning. I was trying to straddle my directorial venture and promotions (of Taare Zameen Par) and my training. And immediately after completing the body shots for Ghajini, the decision to stop training was tough too — since I had worked so hard to get there. Maintaining a good physique doesn't take much, but I had to stop all weight training. Right now, for the last seven months, I have stopped training and am doing a lot of cardio to lose my size and muscle for 3 Idiots. For me it is always a requirement that a character has.

In my training, I was inspired by Arnold Schwarzenegger. But a good trainer is a must. Otherwise you might be putting in a lot of effort but not getting optimum results. My trainer, Satyajit Chourasia, has a very intuitive mind and a good understanding of the mind and body of the person he is training. That is very important. Once you choose a good trainer, you must trust him completely. They are the experts and know better than us how our body responds to stress.

Before you start out every day, spend five minutes meditating. Psyche yourself that today will be your best workout. On a day that you feel lazy or want to skip training, at least walk into the gym. Once you are in the gym, you will start training. On days that you feel out of it, don't push yourself too much or you might injure yourself. Treat each set, each rep as a challenge. Imagine it is your first and last one. Don't reward yourself. You have already done that by completing your workout.

Aamir Khan's tips for wannabe fitness freaks:

1. Start your training slowly.
2. Don't cheat.
3. Give full attention to form.
4. Don't worry about how much weight you are lifting.
5. Get your basics right.
6. Don't try and get results overnight. Body building is a long-term commitment.
7. Eat a well-balanced diet and fresh food.
8. Rest well. And train hard.
9. Don't look for shortcuts. They will only get you into trouble.

10. And always remember that you can achieve the impossible.
