Topic owner: Vivek Paul: Being an EX- IIM(A) student myself how does it feel when CAT is just around the corner. The tensions, nervousness prevails as the D -day arrives. Aspirants prepares for this biggest exam for months and at the last moment there are many things that comes to mind. So here I am creating a discussion where you all CAT aspirants can ask me questions related to CAT 2009.
Vikas Y
I am so perplexed, why no one else ever try to notice that one needs to haev 90% plus score in both class X and XII to get into a good IIM. It is this simple, if you do not have 90%+ in both X and XII, do not waste time on CAT, instead do something else. CAT is not for normal Indians, it is only for socially, economically elite people (there is surprisingly and shockingly super-high correlation between one being from socially and economically backward family and getting less than 90% marks in X and XII).
Kashish Mahajan ooops my bad its catindiaonline.com

Kashish Mahajan well talking about evidence so i have why dont u go to catinfoonline and get the evidences checked
well i thing more selection process mainly remains the same minor adjustments they rank ur % in 10 and 12 from 1 to 8 and talking of what i have achieved is my confidence in quant which u stressed on. so just try stress on ur fundamentals.
well talking about money. today nothing comes handy without money. so work on ur cat, clear it u will get way though it.
i would also suggest u to talk to some iim graduate for conformation

Vikas Y as i said there, its ultimately your life and your money, thus onus is on you to find more about it.
iim management is shrewd enough not to put the selection process so easily on their website. you want to tell me that there whole selection process (at least the critical steps) is listed on their website :D go and check for yourself, i have done my checking. you need to do a little google search to get to the truth. it is so amazing that all these smart people who prepare for IIM do not bother about the bottleneck equation in the selection process.
BTW, what have you tried and what has worked, tell that, that will have more info then just using blanket statemens like "u are wrong" without providing any evidence to the contrary.

Kashish Mahajan vikas i got 87 an 88 in my 10 and 12 and i m good with what i do . i dnt kno what hit u but truly u are wrong therenothing such go to any iim website u will definately get ur doubts clear and have confidence in whatever u do dnt get scared of maths i wont kiil u take it as a suggestion. i have tried and it worked
Vikas Y maybe people replying here have more than 90% in X and XII, or they run money making coaching classes. My message is for those who do not have more than 90% in X and XII. It is mainly this group of people who end up loosing important years of their lives and wasting huge monies of their parents, filling pockets of coaching classes. and if even these people think i m saying junk, then it is their lives and their parents money. you are most welcome to waste both, that is part of freedom of experience provided to every Indian by our constitution. It is their money and it s their lives, so onus is no way on me to provide any more info. they themselves should go and find the truth. They should be grateful that someone tried to empower them with this lifesaving knowledge.
Ankur, your saying that "you know loads of people who are in IIMABCD and do not have 90%+ in both X and XII", is same as my saying that "in my survey of 2,000,000 people who have been to IIMABCD almost everybody had 90% plus in X adn XII".
"CAT Is fraction so is the % of X and XII", now instead of just typing here, go and try to figure out what is the distribution of this % and how does it affect ones real chance of getting into IIM. that will be lot helpful instead of just providing hypothetical numbers. anyone who is spending his or her life and money for IIM should do this exercise and not me.

First of all its a public forum, so YOU SHOULD better keep your tone WITHIN limits.. (should you? should you?)
But i guess that's how you want to communicate.. So here's my reply..
GET YOUR FACTS (or whatsoever) CORRECTED.. I know LOADS of PEOPLE and I MEAN LOADS who are into IIM - A,B,C,K,L,I (whichever you want to call a GOOD IIM, your call.. ) who dint have a percentage even close to 90%.
CAT is surely a fraction, but SO IS the PERCENTAGE of Class X & Class XII.
And And And, Weightage of CAT(along with GD And PI) is MUCH MUCH MORE than the Weightage given to class X and XII percentage in Final Selection to IIMs.

Kashish Mahajan i think u have got a wrong info about % thing if u get 99% or plus in cat u can get in good iim
Vikas Y Reply to Ankur Gupta (below):
I did not say you need 90% to clear CAT, did i? did i? why dont you just reread what i wrote before making your reply. CAT exam is only a fraction of all that takes to get into an IIM. I was taking about getting into IIM. the other things other than CAT which contribute two tiem s more than CAT to your chances of getting an admit to IIM. So i repeat what i said, in case you still do not get it, "one needs to haev 90% plus score in both class X and XII GET INTO A GOOD IIM".
Thisis the whole farce here, people who are spending their time and their parents money do not even know what they are dealing with. It only makes money for IIM through admission fee and specially for coaching classes. you are not a highschool kid for godsake, you are a graduate who claimst o haev very good intelligence!

Ankur Gupta I don't think that is true.. in fact THAT's completely false.. U do need to have a "GOOD SCORE" in your class 10 and 12th exams for clearing CAT... but 90% surely isn't a NECESSARY requirement for cracking the CAT exam..

WE all know CAT is the hardest exam ever!!
I am not giving the exam this year but.. i tried a few mock exams and my score was quite low. How do i improve significantly so i can be compared amongst the top students in the country. ??

Vikas Y you need to have 90% plus marks in your Class X and XII each. Do you have this? if yes, then you are lucky. go on. else do not waste important defining years of your life.

Dev Kashyap
Hey guys can anyone tell if I need to have some experience / internship to be in the IIMs?
Vikas Y i still do not see that happening, anyways good luck!!
Kashish Mahajan ill sure give u my piece of advice when i ll clear it and definately in 2010 so then u can hopefully get ur doubts cleared and one more thing people getting 35% dont think about CATcoz its ur aptitude that works in CAT not miracles so think again when u write and critical analysis then i think u need a critical analysis by a CAT coaching institue
Vikas Y i did not say anything about iim's hefty add fee, did i?
And believe me, no one "clears" CAT, there is no clearing, everybody gets a freaking percentile score.. it is not like you cleared your Class X exam by getting more than 35%. I am not even talking about writing CAT and how easy or difficult that exam is. I think one key part of CAT is critical analysis of a passage, i do not see that happening after reading your replies but i will take your word that you "cleared" CAT.

Kashish Mahajan well if u say iim is all about hefty add fees so wen u get out of iim u get that amount back within one year of ur jog or may be before that too try talk to people who have done cat and cleared it
Vikas Y hi kashish, how can you do it? are you preparing for IIM? if u are then you should better know how much is the weightage of CAT score and how much is of X and XII score. if yo udo your maths right, I can guarantee yo, yo uwill be shocked.
Kashish Mahajan dont dool on one thing get 99% or more then even if u have less than 90% in 10 and 12 combined u can do it
Vikas Y you need to have 90% plus marks in your Class X and XII each. Do you have this?

Vivek, what are the best ways to deal with CAT Stress???
Vivek Paul Hi Dinaz,
I hope you are putting in at least 10 hours by now :) Pursue a hobby. That’s the best way to handle stress. Focus on your strong areas. Study in parts. Don’t stretch yourself too much. All the Best Dear

Hi Vivek, need an advice from you, how many mock papers should one attend in a week just before CAT 2009?
Yesican Co In Hi Supriya, in my opinion - 1 week before CAT - just give one Mock CAT - focus on your analysis... you would have identified your weak areas / strengths - so just revise those - also ... have a couple of strategies for the d-day. Thats a must.. let us know if you need any other tips... www.yesican.co.in
Vivek Paul Hello Supriya,
The first 4 weeks of November ...8 to 9 tests....Space them out and give sufficient time for Analysis. But do not over stress yourself. All the Best
