Sv Nagappa
Sv Nagappa Hi Tamanna, I have studied in oz with a scholorship, worked here all my life and living here. My advice to you is dont make the move just yet. My advice has nothing to do with the so called racial attacks as the whole thing is blown out of proportion by Indian media to show their so called supramacy after the Harbhajan singh incident in cricket. They want to teach aussies a lesson. I am sorry with that attitude Indians will be the losers. The reason why I say that you should wait is because you are young and since I came here when I was young I know how difficult it was even though I had relatives here. First of all there are working restrictions here whihc means you will take risky night jobs whihc I would not advice for you to do. The next thing is home sickness and cultural shock for some girls it hits badly as unlike boys who tend to live in groups girls become vulnarable. Finish your basic degree with good marks, work hard to get good grades, then apply for post grad here and your merit will be recognized. You can go to the websites and see whihc professional courses get most points. Dont go to hair dressing , cooking etc. Once you have a good degree chances are that you may get part time job at the Uni itself whihc pays well and works positively for your career. I have worked in the university, private and government sector here, but the amount of racism I have encountered is extremely mild compared what I have seen in India. Even on the short visit to India I encounter more sexist, racist bias in statements, behaviour and language than compared all these years worth in australia. Australia welcomes hardworking young students who are well mannered. From our family we have helped many students and I have personally helped lots of students to settle here when they first come. In the country areas even for refugees I know people from groups who raise money to help. The disgraceful behaviour of Indian media is both appaling and shows immaturity of Indian media who do not know how to use their new found exposure and power for good. India has 34 murders per 1000 people australia has 15 murders for 1000 people. Which is safer? Why doesnot Indian media fight for murders in India? Where were they hiding when Ruchika was being harassed? How are they helping to clean up corruption? If they had spent even half the time they spent blaming Australia then they could have helped hundreds of beggers who line up tamples for food and shelter. Come and see how Australian churches help the poor and then you will realise the differece in the society. People are treated here with dignity. Some of my best friends are aussies. So in conclusiion, I would ask you to finish your degree with good marks, apply for post grad and come here and you will see the truth.

Shivaji Raje I agree with you and have the same opinion, what media and politicians do is their bit, donot get carried way with that. As an Indian I would do what I believe in, and at this point I totally agree with you prince.

Prince Singh Dear Tamanna

I would like to answer your question in only few words.By calling Australia a racist country we Indians are in a false denial that India is not a racist country. Take an example of 1984 sikh massacrer and an attack on the holy shrine of sikhs Golden Temple and same in 1991in hindu muslim riots the demolision of Babri Masjid. What can we call all this and recently the Bihari Issue in Mumbai raised by Raj Thackrey. In todays date also there are villages in India full of racism. Racism against schedule castes, Dalits,Rich and poor, Dowry system and others. Where there is weaker person then I must say there is a Racism. We are in a absolute denial that India is not a racist country and what I and others believe that India is the worst in Racism. I have been living in Australia from last 10 years but never experienced any kind of racism but I must say that our own Indian person had been racist to me once and did not give me the job.I found Australia and Australians very kind, generous and friendly people. So, if you are thinking to come to Australia then do not listen to the media or somebody else. Only just listen to heart and do research and take ur own decision.

Stephen Lee
Stephen Lee Dear Tamanna, as an Australian, and a school teacher (with 3 degrees) all of my life, I can honestly say you are, and certainly will be, more than welcome here, and you will be happy and safe. In fact, as a student, even more safe than in India. That is simply a fact. But, if you decide not to come, well, that's ok also. We normal, average Australians very much like and respect people from India, (except maybe your cricket teams when they are thrashing us :-) and we sincerely like anyone from anywhere who might want to come here. But, if you decide not to come here, well that's just fine also. Please know, we are NOT a racist, violent or unfair country, and we certainly regret the cases of violence against your countrymen, or anyone. With several mates who are policemen, I know they are working hard to find these odious criminals. And they will. Most crimes in Australia are solved. So, feel free to decide upon your education on the real factors that matter to you, where ever you end up going, and don't be influenced by exagerated media reports. And, the very best of luck for your future, Tamanna, what ever you decide. With much respect to all our Commonwealth cousins, Stephen from Melbourne, Australia.

Hemanth Nayak
Hemanth Nayak Attacks are all over the world, only due to some reasons these have come as a big news, its not a big deal until n unless ur careful and stay in decent streets. and one important thing, THERE HAS NEVER BEEN AN ATTACK ON ANY WOMEN OR GALS, its all on guys, who have been attacked. i have never heard about any gals yet. so i think u should not worry, i have also faced this situation once, luckily i tried to escape.

and regarding Education, I reckon INDIAN education is FAR FAR FAR better than AUssie's, and as some friends below say Post graduates is a better option than under graduates. i too agree.

so thnk twice before u decide.

all the best.

Imran Ahmad
Imran Ahmad Well, there is no particular problems I have heard with girls here. In fact Australians are fond of girls, doesnt matter from where they belong to. This is because of only one obvious thing girls have. Guys are bit of a problem, although there are lots gays here but I am skeptical about whether they prefer Indians. Attacks on Indian males suggest probably they are not liked here.

Arvind Arvind
Arvind Arvind what rocky and sach ka samna as told is 100% true, racism happens every where. as sach told "If you have money to spare and living in right areas, I dont think studying in any country is a problem" and also you should hang out with right people you will enjoy the stay here. Its your life so its upto you decide what you have to do with it .

Sach Ka Samna
Sach Ka Samna Life for international students can be very difficult aboard, whether its UK or Australia. Many foreign universities charge extremely high fees for qualification that may not provide good skills or jobs. Agency makes lot of false promises and students struggle, especially if you are comming from a modest background. In last decade or so Indian and chinese have created revenue and jobs for foreiegn countries in billions. Our governments can use this money and create more research based universities instead of revenue going outside. And employement sector is not that hanky-dory, even if you are able to get a job in terms of growth. If you have money to spare and living in right areas, I dont think studying in any country is a problem. End of the day, shit happens anywhere. Things you should consider if you are hell bent on going-

1. Cultutral shock

2. Home sickness

3. Morale support as living away from family and not having local friends can be very difficult. Apart from racial attacks, people may taunt you in other ways.

4. Sports or recreational facilities

5.Money to spare for holidays. You need atleast three to four holidays

6. Good living space

7.. Choose top universities only, not in unknown city.

And yes in most western countries it is illegal to harm your attackers and defend yourself.

Rocky Oberoi
Rocky Oberoi Iiving here since 3 yrs. Have been welcomed everywhere. A few things in my live include a lebonese best friend, Portugese girlfriend, Iraqi Barber, Breakfast and coffee at a chinese takeaway, Lunches at a brazillian and thai shops, dinner at turkish shop, sharing room with a british and working for an Italian and the list goes on. Never experienced racialism. I love and respect India my motherland but AU has given me much much more in the last 3 years (in terms of friends/money/live style etc. ) than what I got from India in the first part of your life. But Have Seen more racialism in India in forms for religious riots, regionalism etc. I feel that you get news from AU because Au media is not very controlling. But we here get heaps of news from US/UK/Europe/SAfrica etc about extreme racial abuse but this never reaches news headlines as these countries never let it reach there. Racialism does exist and Its a GLOBAL PHENOMENA. Ultimately its for you to decide, But when you do come let us know...... we'll take care of you. Tip no.1 Hang out with the right people.

Anand Venkatesh
Anand Venkatesh I'm sure this is basically a very personal decision for you & you may have your own pros & cons for it. But since you say that you are going there for your undergrad, I gauge that you are very young. So I don't know whether you will be able to handle the situation well right now. Wait for a year or two, you can always go there for your post-grad. By then, things may normalise.

Anjali Garg
Anjali Garg I would strongly advise you not to go to Aus. The situation there as well as the relationship between the 2 countries right now is very unstable. This will settle down in some time, but for now it's a big no.

Advesh Gowarikar Well, Tamanna, I would advise you to carefully consider your decision. In the recent past, there has been a spate of violence in Austalia, particularly against Indians. This year, I'm sure there will be a significant drop in the number of Indian students going to Australia.
