The name of the nation’s capital should be changed to original ‘Dilli’, proposed M.S Gill, Minister of Sports & Union Youth Affairs. Like many, he feels ‘Dilli’ is more close to people’s heart; after all it is 'sadi Dilli' or 'hamari Dilli'. According to him it also describes the cosmopolitan character of the city more effectively.
The minister has requested Chief Minister, Sheila Dikshit to up the matter with the Centre. While the CM is non committal, the statement has instantly sparked off a debate.

Should ‘Delhi’ be changed to ‘Dilli’?

The demand for name change for Delhi (till now, at least) is not new. All other metros in India have gone back to their original names (Madras to Chennai, Bombay to Mumbai, Calcutta to Kolkata). Each of the name changes has had evoked strong nationwide sentimental furore in past. No exception in the case of Delhi.
Delhi, which is the country’s capital, as well as has several hundred years heritage on the one hand, and the sheen and glitter of a 21-century metropolis on the other, the conflict surely is going to be even stronger. Name of a city is not the matter of concern for its local citizens alone, after all!
But will the change to 'Dilli' go down well with people? – People of the city, across the country and around the world?
Others are of the opinion: "Let the national capital's name be somber, we have our memories with Delhi, so let it be Delhi only." (read more)
