This is that time of the year again! As stifling competition for college admission kicks off, the evil genie of Capitation fees corruption has come out of the bottle.
A sting operation by ‘The Times of India’ and ‘Times Now’ has exposed how seats in medical colleges in Tamil Nadu are being put on sale for Rs. 20-40 lakhs. It also drags a newly-sworn central govt. minister’s name in the list of the accused.
Several other incidents have been reported in the newspapers in the last few days.
As the government is increasingly taking 'hands off' from higher education, private colleges have mushroomed across the country. Most of these colleges illegally demand huge capitation fees for admission, which obviously puts mediocre but rich-and-willing-to-pay students before the meritorious but less-affluent ones.
This is how corruption creeps into tender, young minds early in life.
Asking for capitation fees for admission is illegal (Prohibition of Collection of Capitation Fees Act 1992).
