| Oz racism: Enough talk, Make our Govt act! | |||
I started off the day in a fit of rage. Yesterday there was an event of arson in a Gurudwara in Australia, which the Australian Police finds ‘suspicious’, as they are yet to establish the underlying motive. Then again today, there is a report of Indian cab driver being attacked.
R Morgan:
I read with perplexed amusement the comments made by mostly Indian people about the supposed “racist” actions of the Australian community - a plethora of hysterical tirades by people who have never been to Australia and obviously know nothing about Australia.
To add to this idiotic ranting when any person of Indian decent tries to point out to Indian Times readers that Australia is not a racist country, that they have not and do not experience racist here, they are dismissed as delusional or betrayers of the homeland etc etc. The problem here has very little to do with Australia and all to do with some insecurity or sensitivity in the Indian community. The Australia being propagated by the Indian media is a fantasy – it doesn’t exist, it’s all in the imagination and is feeding on some cultural fear. Listen to your countrymen and women who live here – they are grounded in the reality of Australia. I am of European origin but an adherent of Adwaita Vedanta and I understand that to know the truth you must see what is there in reality and to not be deceived by ones fears and imagination. Ask yourself, who is more likely to know the truth a journalist in Mumbai who has never been to Australia or an Indian resident in Melbourne. Shanti
Rohini Srinivas: Thanks Arpan and Amit, people like us have to convince others back home not to go hysterical based on media reports which are more fiction than fact. Himanshu, you ask why Indians and I repeat it isnt only Indians, just that you happen to live in India and TOI only writes about Indians mugged here. Also, I would urge you not to hurl accusations around, instead visit Australia and see for yourself how peaceful it is. Muggings, murders, even racial attacks happen everywhere, more so in India, however, that doesnt make the whole of India racist. Also am not sure where you got the information that foreigners don't get hurt or murdered in India, read this very paper and you may find news (though much smaller article) about so many foreigners killed in Paharganji in Delhi. Also lets not forget the Aussie, peaceloving, priest who was mercilessly butchered by some Hindu racists. As for Aussie cricketers, I agree they dont like losing, that's why they win so much. But how's that racist??
Posted on Mon, 18 Jan, 2010 Report abuseHimanshu Vandematr..: The consistent attacks particularly against Indians in Australia is definitely the racism. I would rather say, the different form of t***or from Australia. When a person beats or assaults and kills the innocent person like this, that person is definitely a t***orist. It applies to anyone, irrespective of any country that person belongs to. These consistent attacks by, "Australian t***or" seems to have solid network. Australian government is trying to defend by saying, "it happens everywhere in the world". It sounds really aweful and bull**** way of defending. When you compare Indian population proportionately with the population of any countries in the world, say Australia, the number of incidents happens to foreigners in India are less. Especially of assaults and killing to particular community. Ofcourse Indian assaults Indian is different aspect in this topic.

Himanshu Vandematr..:
In India may be the foreigners are looted but not harmed or assaulted or killed. Atleast the person is safe. Again getting looted is very common in every corner of the world, whether its USA or EU or whatever. But what makes me so disturbed is, " THE CONSISTENT ATTACKS PARTICULARLY ON INDIANS IN AUSTRALIA !!! ". I just dont understand, why only the Indians ?
Dudes, you are sidelining the major topic of racism. I have been to many parts of the world and met different cricket playing country's people and we all have one thing to say, "most aussies cricket players can not digest loss on the field and have no sportsmanship".
Arpan Kothari: @ Rohini -I totally agree with your point of view. I have been here since 5 years and what I have noticed is that every Aussie is not as bad or racist as we really think. Such criminal activities happens everyday in India and no one really bothers. Why Indian MPs are taking initiatives and really thinks that the such should be discouraged in Oz? Why they cannot keep the same spirit and attitude when it comes to deal with the same problems in India itself. The only difference is that we really have somewhat high expectations from Australia as we are really think that this country has potential to attract migrants and offer high standard of life. Also before making any statements, one need to look at their own records. In India there were around 22,000 cases of murders, dowry and so on and in Oz there were only 228 case against Indian and only 2 cases of murder.
Posted on Sun, 17 Jan, 2010 Report abuseAmit Shri: i have been living here for the past 5 years and have enjoyed each and every moment. it is no doubt sad and disheartening to hear the news about the attacks but to call australia or australians racist is absolutely wrong. by the kind of hype that the indian media is creating the problems will only get aggravated. in fact to think of it we have more racism (north indian, south indian, bihari, etc.) in india than we find anywhere ab
Posted on Sun, 17 Jan, 2010 Report abuseRohini Srinivas: Mr Degin Bhai, I dont have to repeat that I am Indian (you may still not believe it, like u dont believe anything else I have to say), though don't feel very proud of it when I come across the mindless bigotry in these kind of blogs. But then I quickly remind myself that everyone in India, most of my friends and family don't suffer from similar divisive and destructive ideas and they do believe us. Similarly, even when you do hear the odd racist comment from an Australian, do remind yourself that all Indians living here are trying very hard to tell you that 99.9% of Australians arent like that. It's up to you if you want to believe the people you're supposedly trying to help - in these blogs the one common thing I found is that all Indians in Oz believe it's a beautiful, tolerant country. The problem is no one else seems to be listening to the people they're supposedly trying to help and making trouble where none existed in the past.

Degin Bhai:
To Rohini Srinivas, i have a few question to ask you to understand your comments and then give you answers
1. Are you and Indian?
2. If yes, do you consider yourself to be an Indian
3. Are you blind?
4. Are you paid good by the Australians?
5. Are you safe in Australia
Australian have agreed that the attacks are "racially" motivated and you still try to protect them. For your information, Indians are not babies. So do not make such comments. Because if that was the case then you are a baby (if you are an Indian). Thats why asked the question. Now Indian have been attacked & humilated in Australia since a long time. Everytime Indian kept quite. Now people are getting killed. Why? Can you answer this question?
If you want another reason why Australian are racist, check Ricky Pointing reactions against "BCCI" president. That is no sportsmanship.
So MS anti-Indian, please think before you write.
Sach Ka Samna: This is a sensitive issue and must be dealt sensibly as Indian worldwide can be at risk. Even Australians visiting India be at danger. Australia needs to improve awaress on diversity of its cultures and its benefits. If India provokes in a hostile way, things will just get worse. Our country needs to project our image worldwide through media and other resources in a positve manner. We are a young country and many young westerners do not understand various cultures very well. India government must coordinate with all governments in order show immigrants worldwide help economies and bridge the gap for peace. Worldwide due to recession, immigrants are coming under heavy attack. Every political party is stiring immigration issue to secure trust among people with false information. Let every western country know, if Indians aboard are treated unfairly then trade will be affected for both ways.
Posted on Sun, 17 Jan, 2010 Report abuseRohini Srinivas: To Mr Sher Singh and many others like him in India, please do not make assumptions and say what you 'think' as if its a 'fact'. Indians like me, in Australia are not stupid to say we are safe when we're not. Come here for a visit and see how tolerant and helpful Aussies are before you provoke any more people to fight without cause. What I'd like to fight for is to stop India from behaving like 'rebels without a cause'. I want to protect Aussies from the charges of 'racism' and I want to protect Indians from looking like babies who throw tantrums and cry for no reason. And if you make any more calls for burning or violence, let me tell you that you're worse than any of the criminals here who you're supposedly fighting against. And I will report you if you do that again. People like you give Indians a bad name everywhere in the world.
Posted on Sun, 17 Jan, 2010 Report abuseRohini Srinivas: Take it from an Indian living in Oz, there is no such thing as Curry Bashing. Stop reading The Times of India that is sensationalising this issue to sell their paper. Log onto the Sydeny Morning Herald instead, it's a more authentic source of information. This whole 'delusional' racism charge and all the threats to 'take action', 'boycott games' is so pathetic. Only people who have never been to Australia and known the friendliness and tolerance of Aussies can talk like that. Most incidents are certainly not racist, and even if some are (none proven yet), it certainly doesnt make the whole country racist. Every country, India more than any other, has its share of racists. Please devote all this energy to a real cause, there are many in India.
Posted on Sun, 17 Jan, 2010 Report abuseSher Singh: Hello Neha, I think the Indians in Australia are just saying that so as not to provoke more attacks. They're afraid which is understandable. But I think Indians should fight back now since the police are not doing anything. I think the police are hoping that Indians will eventually leave if they just continue to ignore this problem and just keeping saying that nothing is wrong and that these are just random attacks that could happen anywhere, even in India. So Indians in Australia, fight back and let them know who you are. I know these attackers are cowards, so if you fight back you'll be fine. I'm an Indian from the UK and this sort of thing used to happen there, until the Asians got upset and almost literally burned the towns of Burnley and Bradford to the ground. The police were not able to do anything as they had never encountered anything like this before. This is what Indians in Australia need to do if these comedians don't do anything!!

Posted on Sun, 17 Jan, 2010 Report abuseNeha Kirpal: Yes, I think our govt is just not doing enough. But it seems that even some Indians in Australia are saying that the Indian media is overreacting & that it's not really such a big deal in Aus. How can that be though??
